  18. 1. If this file was zipped. Unzip and copy all files to a new, empty directory (folder).
  19. 2. Close this file.
  20. 3. Run setup.exe from your preferred file management program.
  21. Be sure to install this program in a directory different than the directory created
  22. in step 1 above.

  30.   *Character generator client function (CHARGEN) now displays characters/second
  31.   *If you don't have a hosts file, NetScanTools will optionally create one for you.
  32.   *NetScanner crash on "no hosts file present" fixed.
  33.   *File that kept the date of first shareware use will be removed and is no longer used.
  34.   *Windows 95 users now get links to the uninstall program and the readme file.
  35.   *MRU host or IP list will not accept empty entries in the dropdown combo box.
  36.   *Windows 95 users without a network connection to a DNS or WINS now get

  46. What is NetScanTools?
  47.  
  48. NetScanTools contains a number of ports of UNIX functions:
  49.  
  50. nslookup -- name server lookup of host names or IPs
  51. finger -- gets info on users on remote systems
  52. ping -- determines ability to connect to a remote host
  53. traceroute -- determines route taken to reach a remote host
  54. whois -- a lookup utility for determining registered internet names etc.
  55. daytime -- the time of day on a remote host
  56. quote -- returns quote of the day from a remote host
  57. character generator -- a client that accesses a chargen service to determine your link speed.
  58. What's new at NWPS' web site -- a barebones URL grabber.
  59. NetScanner -- A easy to sequentially ping an IP address range to find
  60.   the active computers. Will also resolve the IPs to host names. Hosts
  61.   file management.

  63. Also included are functions to determine the services your version of
  64. sockets can connect to; the protocols understood by your version of sockets;
  65. and general info about your version of Windows sockets.

  79.  
  80. This program requires Windows NT 3.51 (tm), 4.0 or Windows 95 (tm).
  81. It will not run on Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, Win32s, Windows for Workgroups, or
  82. Windows NT 3.5 or 3.1.  It has been successfully tested on Windows NT 4.0 with
  83. sockets 2.0. (all the preceeding are trademarks or registered trademarks of
  84. the Microsoft Corporation).

  86. Ping, Traceroute and Netscanner will not work correctly on non-Microsoft
  87. Winsock TCPIP stacks that are not integrated with ICMP.DLL. We are working to
  88. address this for those third party winsocks.
  89.  
  90. An actively running connection to a network using a Windows
  91. Sockets (or compatible) link is suggested.  Network cards to TCPIP networks are OK and
  92. dialup connections to internet providers are OK.  If you use dialup, you
  93. must be using a SLIP or PPP connection (TIA and Slirp work fine for all
  94. functions except ping and traceroute which require a static IP). Your installation
  95. of Windows NT or 95 must have icmp.dll in the system or system32 path for
  96. ping and traceroute to work.

  98. The cancel <specific function> buttons only respond under Windows 95 and NT 3.51
  99. service pack 3 or 4.
  100.

  102. NetScanTools. Most of what you see are the result of suggestions from users.
